The 6 speed compared to the DSG is slow. Many MANY 6 speeds sit on the lot here at the local VW dealer, DSGs are almost never in stock here.

DSG shift times are a fraction of what even a professional racer can do. It actually selects the next gear you're likely to shift to by watching engine RPM changes, and holds that gear ready to engage. And since it has two clutches, all it does is engage one clutch while disengaging the other. It also blips the throttle to match the RPMs perfectly. Also, because the clutches are electronically controlled, they last a lot longer, because just like my truck, the computer will minimize the amount of slip it uses to launch the car. Slip=wear.

I understand how it works, but why? Was he going for the DSG for performance reasons, or because of laziness? (and this question is not a knock. City driving sucks with a manual.) I personally find it to be a jazzed up automatic rather than a piece people use for performance.

I've test driven two cars, albeit at seperate dealers. A Black 6MT, but black is a no-no really, and then the red DSG...

The DSG is FAST, to me it'* sportier, especially since it'* not an automatic with paddles. It blips the throttle nice when you downshift to accelerate, a nice tone comes out for sure... I told myself I *won't* get an auto this time around, torque converters just kill the feeling of power, and hurt mileage, usually need a full rebuild when broken instead of say, a clutch job.

Lazy? I took my final license test in a manual car. But the price was right, and the options were right. If I just wanna put it in D and cruise to work I can, if I get stuck in stop and go it'* nice to have the option of auto as well. It drives just like a manual when you get on/off the gas etc since it uses a real clutch. DSG is even rated 1mpg more in city IIRC..

Oh and I watch Formula 1 too, so it sorta brings a little piece of that literally to my finger tips.

EDIT: That video is of an 07 with launch control. Some 06'* will take the firmware for LC, so I might try to see if the dealer will do that at some point... The PCU and TCU allow the engine to rev up, and then give a perfect launch around 3000rpms when you get off the gas..

Here'* a kinda cheesy video from japan, but it shows just how good it is.

ok, this is the answer I was looking for. I did not know you tested both the 6M and the DSG. The laziness comment was not a poke, I seriously was curious. It'* amazing the people out there that want a sporty car, but won't buy a manual.

Glad to hear you got what you wanted. Enjoy!!

ZOMG it'* fun!

Finishing up bug and tar remover on it, then claybar. I'm only doing this because of the proximity of the VW dealer, to a few dirt mounds/pits (literally next door).

No cutting or polishing though probably, toss on some wax quick and go out for a great drive, it'* 77* and nothing but blue skies.

Turbo whoosh is fun My dad was asking me about the Sol GXP engine after driving my car...
