Default Should I upgrade to Vista?

I received a free cd to upgrade to Windows Vista Basic today and I was wondering should I upgrade or not. Currently I'm running XP Home which is the basic version for XP. I'm thinking upgrading to Vista Basic would be like upgrading from a 99 SE to a 00 SE. Basic but still new improved features.

A few stats about my PC

512MB RAM
60GB HD
AMD Mobile Athlon processor

it really depends on what other programs you have. check compatibility with all of your drivers first.

512 mb of ram? You are nowhere near ready to run Vista. On top of that, upgrading right away when something new comes out is a BAD idea. Wait at least another year before upgrading when all the bugs and hacks and drivers are ironed out. I dont even think that there is anything out there that NEEDS to take advantage of Vista. Even hard core gamers dont need it right now. Going from XP to Vista will be a downgrade for you, especially with that old system of yours.

Basic actually has less features than standard, I dont think you're gonna like it. Thats partly the reason why they are giving it away for free.

Like I said, wait for a year, and after you build yourself a new system, then mayby you can consider going to Vista. Even so, what can Vista do for you that XP cant? Not much, I can tell you that for sure.
