Road Test.......Whipple-charged........
Test drove a whipple yesterday for a friend. The owner of the vehicle offered him the complete setup for the cost of removing it and going back to stock. His intent is to hopefully adapt it to his 1984 EFI 5.0 Mustang.......with a little help from me. We're in the research phase right now for adapters/manifolds, etc:







Impressions? This thing is a complete DOG. There'* considerable lag, in a turbo-like manner. There'* no power off the line, and only 'noticable' power when you get into boost. 6psi was the highest I could achieve after several attempts yesterday. Not a prayer of scratching the tires off the line, which is interesting, as this thing should be able to in stock form.
Upon further inspection and review, I believe this charger is horribly undersized for the application. It'* quite small compared to the kit Whipple currently sells, and the mounting is totally different.
I'm not sure where this kit came from or what it was intended for.

That looks awfully like the Mercedes setup, like the SLK230, but without the EM clutch. Looks like the controller is piggybacked to the factory ECM. Possibly something is getting lost in translation?

What kind of ignition system is it running? I'm not familiar with those engines, but weren't they running the distributor-type HEI system, or is it coilpacks? And has any DTCs been pulled? (I know if you had the time or the scanner handy it would have been done already).
There is no major difference in a Whipple as opposed to an Eaton other than the rate of twist and internal mechanical tolerances.

I have used them before and know of several chevs around blown by whipple and have never seen that type of set up... None of them are dogs either I suspect that for the cost of adding a New blower to that 5.0 VS using this blower would be about the same. Noting you mentioned not being able to pull 6psi out of it... IMHO new would be better. Although I DO NOT underestimate your ability to rebuild that blower Will just think the cost of parts vs new would be close to what a kit designed for the car would carry.
