Swear to god. I just sat there sipping coffee and moved that sucker around. No trick to it whatsoever.

There does seem to be a pattern though. I only played it that one time.

I noticed the pattern, and it'* not random. They bounce at about 90 degree angles from where they hit the walls, if I'm seeing it correctly. There were a coupla games where I survived 'till 11 seconds or so just by keeping that red square in the upper left corner.
