Although the Escort is a good piece of equipment, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Valentine or BEL STi'R. All 3 are good. And in different situations, they other two beat Escort often.

Valentine is one of the companies tested against Escort during the demonstration I saw, I would feel comfortable recommending them as well. Heard plenty of good things about them.

I don't bother with equipment. I watch my surroundings, people ahead of me, and find "pointmen". Really hard not to find someone you can draft going a speed comfortable to you. "Guinea Pigs" are free. Let them test the forward space.

I'm the same way... Even with my radar detector I still prefer to draft someone else a half mile or so back, then I know I'll have a warning when they get popped. It'* a very helpful reminder though, sometimes I forget to watch my speed especially going downhill in town. Or like last night, there was a big utility truck parked in the turn around, luckily I am a curtious driver and got in the right lane and slowed down well before I got to the truck. After I passed the truck there was a cop hidden behind him shooting, sneaky sneaky.

I used to have a dirt cheap Viper radar/lidar/VG-2 detector. It was $30 during a Circuit City going-out-of-business sale (one store, not the chain), and I had a $25 gift card. Saved my rear end a couple of times.

I took it apart because the buttons kept sticking. Unfortunately, as I was moving at the time, a couple pieces went missing. If I find a good deal, I'll get another one.

I've mastered the guinea pig technique as Venom described, plus I'm a tad slower until the end of the year when my previous (and only) ticket is expunged -- Connecticut says that two or more moving violations in a three-year period means you need to take a $60 driver re-training course.

Of course, near where I live, the speed limit is 55, the drivers go 80, and the cops go 90. Kind of a moot point, except for the odd stretch of highway that drops from 65 to 45 with no reason. (Waterbury, I'm looking at you.)

I have a whistler fusion. a bit expensive, but it fits in a gauge pod, all antennas are external, even the speaker is external. So no one has any idea you have one. It also can tell if law enforcement is sniffing for it and shut down for a few minuets and then take another peek to see if it'* safe to turn back on.

I back up a good Radar Detector with a good lawyer. I got pegged four months ago from the side. My detector has got great angular detection front and rear, but obviously marginal from perpendicular angles. So, fired up the lawyer and the ticket got tossed.
