Default Question for the Mac gurus....

Would a 533MHz G4 be "faster" than a 600MHz G3? I am being told 2 totally different things, that yes the G4 is faster, because they have the Altivec, and no the G3 is faster because it is a higher rating. So, what is it!

I don't have a definate answer for you either. However, I myself would go with the G4 Processor as it is more up to date.

Forgot to mention, the 600Mhz G3 is in a iMac, and the G4 is in a Tower.

shouldn't matter. I suggest you get whatever fits your needs better. I have had both of those exact machines. Both worked great for what they did.

What price are you looking at? Don't pay more than 100-150 for either.

Here is what I am wanting to pick up. I have the 600Mhz iMac currently, I love it and all, but I wanna use my 19" LCD as a monitor, not the little 15" display on the iMac.

I'd say go with the G4, and make THAT one faster than it is now.

I'm not sure about your iMac and if you have any connections on it that would allow you to run dual monitors off of it. If you could that would be another option too.

Actually, I am mirroring right now. The iMac is sitting on the bottom of my desk, and I have my LCD hooked up to it. bad thing is the display on the iMac can't be shut off, so it sits down there glowing. This iMac I have is one of the rarer ones, it is a Snow 600, one of the last ones made before they went to the flat panel iMacs. :P
