A close friend of mine called me frantically tonight, her '93 grand prix with a 3.1(im assuming its an l36, im not big on GM stuff) was messed up. She was going to buy fuses as all her interior lights werent working, neither were the power locks. That wasnt the problem though, when she went back out into the parking lot to start her car, it got bad. She pressed in the brake and the car tried to start itself, the fans kicked on and everything. I didnt really belive her, so when i got there i pressed the brake and the car tried to turn over when the ignition was in the off position and the keys were in her hand. Since it was late and i had no lighting i didnt bother with it. Im posting this, here, hoping that you guys can give me some insight on whats going on and if its a common problem or anything. Im definatly not new to mechanics as i have a bolt on '02 sentra spec-v and a awd dsm that im rebuilding for 30+psi. Wiring/electrics are my weakpoint however. Im pretty sure that the 3.1 she has in there also came in a number of bonnevilles but if i am wrong i hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Hmmm, well the 3.1 is RPO code LHO, but this will need to be moved to the lounge, since it is not a H-body.

But it seems to me like someone was under her dash and screwed with some wires. sounds like the ignition was somehow wired to her brake switch, unless there are melted wires contacting.

Nonone has messed with the wiring, im guessing something came loose and shorted or melted and shorted. Not sure, guess ill have to wait and see. Sorry if this isn't the right forum guys, im a total n00b here

May also want to try http://www.clubgp.com/ for the Grand Prix. The Bonnevilles have the 3800, and we're not real experienced on the wiring - but while you're here, was there any work that was done on the car recently? Any aftermarket electronics? Alarm, remote start, etc.

On another note, noone has worked on the car at all lately, she has had a system (tweeters, 6x9s run off an amp, and two subs ran off another amp. I cant really explain it, im wondering if the interior lights going out all of a sudden have anything to do with it?

Some of the older vehicles had a "courtesy" fuse that if that went, it would cause all kinds of strange things to happen, but mostly with the lighting. Off hand, I can't think of any connection between the lighting and the ignition. Unless the audio system was tied in some strange way, I don't believe that would be a source of the problem.

When strange things like this start to happen, where several systems are affected, it often points to a grounding problem. I don't know where the grounding points may be in the Grand Prix, but I'd start with the battery and engine grounds and connections. While you're at it, may as well clean up all the battery cables.

In my suburban, if I blow the cig lighter fuse, the interior lights do not work but the cig lighe contines to, until the doors are open. :? It'* preatty jacked up

Being a 3.1 Grand prix.. the motor is not a L36, and this would be electrical.

I'm thinking there'* a remote starter added into the vehicle. Something in it'* brain fried and the outcome was probably popping the fuses for the two common things to hook up with a remote starter/alarm. The lights and door locks. Many alarms use relays etc to keep locks and things from working when fuses are pulled or the alarm is triggered.

I was going to ask if it had a remote start as well. The brake usually kills the car if the key is not in. In your case it is starting it. Makes even more sense with the lights and locks after I read Boost'* post. Sounds like a remote start unit got all cross-mojonated.
