does any one know much about these cars?

theres one near me for cheap and im thinking about getting it as a project car.

Stay away from it. My cousin had one, he bought it with a blown head gasket. The thing was garbage. We replaced $1000+ worth of parts and it still ran like total crap, missed, and bucked like crazy. i would stay away unless you have the $$$$$$ to work on it.

Oh, and they are hard as heck to work on, there are a ton of wires and hoses under that hood.

The original DSM... 2.6L inline six. RWD. Not sure if all were turbo.

Reliability wise, they were pretty poor, but from what I've heard they can still be pretty fun.

couple kids on local forums have them. Cool cars, but as said, original DSM'*. One just threw a rod one week after putting it back on the road. He'* selling it for parts now. Might be able to get you the contact info if you do decide to purchase it and need parts, or if you want to know more.

i wouldnt pay that much, im sure i could talk them down. cash is a powerful bargaining tool

i know about dsm reliability....or lack there of. but im not lookin for a daily driver, just a fun project car.

I had one. The 2.6 has a few flaws to it...the biggest one being it has a "jet valve" in each combustion chamber (essentially making it a 12 valve motor). These jet valves are small, and are located between the intake and exhaust valves. It is this area where they will start hairline cracks, and eventually causing head failure. The fix to this is to use the 2.6 head that is found in the Dodge Caravan (they used the 2.6 as an optional motor until I think 1988, when the V6 came online) as they do not use the jet valves. When I pulled the head off of mine, all four chambers had cracks.

Next bad thing is the fuel injection. It uses a really messed up throttle body injection system, and acts just like a carburator in the sense that one injector is big (primary and always fires) and another small injector (secondary, works at about 2 grand on up). The injector connectors are always giving problems, and the fuel line to throttle body gaskets always leak. And the front-end design will wear out upper and lower ball joints really quick. Steering is the old-style recirculating ball type.

But these cars do have good points. They come with LSD'* stock, their intercoolers are already pretty big (though Volvo takes the prize on "my cooler is bigger than yours"), and are becoming quite rare. If you get this, look for a hood from an 83 Starion...these hoods are the only ones with built-in hood scoops that actually work, and will bolt onto any year StarQuest.

EDIT: Urban legend states the name "Starion" came to be because Mitsubishi initally wanted to name it "Stallion" but there is no "L" sounding equivalent in the Japanese language (closest thing to them is "R"....so they would actually say "Godzirra" instead).

ANOTHER EDIT: These were world cars...they were everywhere from Austrailia to the UK, and a twist of irony- the U.*. spec cars got the 2.6 because in America "bigger is better"...everyone else got a much more reliable...and modable...2.0 liter. And there are conversion kits that allow you to put the DOHC 2.0 turbo in it.

My mother bought one brand new in '87 and it was hella FAST!!! Then she sold it to a friend who has it now and was willing to sell it to me for $1g....if interested let me know.....(quite a project though!!!) The rims are oxydised.....needs some turbo work.....frame rot under drivers side front.....paint oxydation.....interior is pretty good though....I think it has like 60-80k on the clock.
