Kodak glass leaves much to be desired IMO. They make good film though.

Canon and Nikon are well known for their lenses.

Thats the camera my sister has, its ok but your right - its not a great camera. Be sure to put it in macro mode for closeups and for night shots you can't really use the automatic features but iirc there is a night portrait mode.

The Canon Powershot 520 & 530 should be down in your price range by now, Check out the reviews to see id you might be interested in them. They had excellent movie modes I beleive.

I really like the Canon SD600 and SD630 models. My mom and sister have the SD600 and my brother has the Canon SD630. They take excellent pics and I believe there are 6MP. Close-up pics have awesome detail for a camera that was bought off www.amazon.com for around $225 with free shipping.
I hope to get one, but the budget now is getting really tight.

I always speak very highly of my Canon A520 (since been replaced by the A530 and A540 (I think)). That would be my pick for a great camera for a reasonable-ish price.

Canon A530'* are on sale around $150 in the twin cities camera shops htis week. I'd get that, or go for a higher end camera, that'* used.

As well, if considering a used camera, see if you can find out how many actuations or pictures were taken with it. Obviously the less, the better - general rule of thumb is to look at the numbering of the file names. But this can be reset, so be wary.

FWIW, my Canon PowerShot A75 is up to IMG_94xx.jpg because I swapped memory cards into other cameras, but really I've done about 7500 shots with it.

I'm a little confused looking at A530s on Ebay. Do they use SD cards or not? I found one for a decent price that says it uses "Multimedia Cards" for expansion memory. I need something that will accept SD cards, as it'* already what I use in my current camera.
