Default PC Virus

One of my dad'* friends got a virus on his PC and now it freezes every time he tries to do anything. I've been asked to assist in this matter, but I just want to make sure I do what I wanna do. He bought a program (probably data migration software) to backup data on his machine. Him and I both have Dells. Is there a way to perform that using his HDD on my machine? I can just make his HDD a slave on my machine right? Can I run the software and get the data from that drive? Or is all lost? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Nick

It'* all good. Now I just want to know how exactly to go about doing that (making it the slave) I've never actually done it, I just had it done to my last HDD on this Dell with another computer guy that was helping me.

Every time I've done this (probably a dozen), I just unplug my CDRom ribbon cable, plug that into the HDD, and plug in the power source (usually from the CDRom, too). When the PC boots up, tell the BIOS that you want the "new" HDD to be the slave.

Winders will recognize it as an additional drive and will letter it with the next available letter.

And can I run that software on the slave? Or do I have to run it on mine?

most scanning software allows you to pick a drive to scan

maybe that was confusing. the software has to be running on your main drive. you tell the software to scan another drive

if your pc is running current anti-virus and spyware programs it will catch it.

Well, i know that there is a jumper on the back of drives that you have to move to make it a master, slave or a few different options. maybe you'll want to look into that too. I know i had to change one of my drive'* jumper to a slave so it would work properly.
