Ok...ready? Oil Additives.
Here we go again. I want some opinions on some oil additives. I know there is no such thing as mechanic in a can, and nothing beats just plain clean oil, yada yada yada. :P
Reading over a few things, I saw wren mentioned that Restore has a tendency to clog filter media...now....right on the can of Restore, it says that it will improve compression. Before I knew really all that much about cars, I used to use a can of Restore in my Ciera's 3300...I never really saw any result whatsoever, BUT, I'm not a compression gauge.. Has anyone out there ever done a compression test on a high mileage engine and then run restore and done another? I am very interested to see if this is good. Now...lets take another one...Lucas oil stabilizer, its bad, it causes oil foaming I've heard...but wait, what was the point of it anyways? Seems regular oil does a pretty good job without it. Any more out there? Like the importance of using an engine flush between oil changes? Can it damage anything to do it once every 3k? Can it play a large role in preventing sludge in sludge prone engines? Ok. don't kill me. Just wanna discuss this. Also, mods move as necessary, I had no idea where to put it, as it is not directly related to bonnevilles |
I use lucas (not in the GXP) but in the 95 I am kinda wondering about that too.
|
I started using Restore after my pressure got low and I was burning oil. It slowed the oil burning quite a bit. But I've got metallic oil now. Maybe it bought me time, maybe not.

My mom put Restore in her oil burning '84 LeBaron with the 2.2. Stopped burning the oil for the whole 3,000 miles the oil was in there.

The oil manufacturer spent millions coming up with its' additives, What makes you want to change it? Ever heard of snake oil? |
I've used Lucas..only thing I could find was it thickened the oil and removed cash from my pocket.
I sold that heap of crap rice burner quickly. |

so. crankcase flushes? anyone do it? anyone see results from it? I tried a crankcase flush one time and it didn't do enough, I still found a ~1/4" layer inside of everything. Felt like I got taken so I just didn't repeat the experience. |
okay, i have used restore multiple times in the tempo, because i though i had low compression. i think i still do, but i did hit it with the compression tester gauge. the numbers have only gone down since i used the stuff. but dont go solely on my testimony. car doesnt smoke, except for right at startup after the car has been running a while. go figure

Ok, so engine flush, maybe with continued uses? I don't expect it to work on its first cycle, but I'm just thinking doing it at every oil change would lead to a cleaner crankcase overtime.
