Default Oh boy do I need a vacation

from the American Forums. We have a member that is causing all kinds of trouble just because she doesn't like Bush. She seems to think she shouldn't be a member of a site that has bush supporters. See what I am talking about. http://messages.iwon.com/jsp/topicview.jsp?tid=499065 see the replies. Here the other post containing the person I think is starting the trouble, http://www.theamericanforums.com/vie...d=3&forum_id=3 , What do you think? Willren, whats your thoughts. Do you guys think the girl from my site and the one on iwon are the same, me and My head Moderator think so. Should she be Banned for attempting to stop people from joining.

Political discussion will and always has been a route for many disagreements, it just goes to show you how divided the American people are.

I dont think its fair to ban someone because of political leanings or because you dont agree with them. Then again its your site and you need to set up a Policy regarding topics, without a guideline for what is acceptable content, you must be prepared for a "wild west" type atmosphere. If you only want Bush/Republican based commentary, then calling it the American Forums is not fair, or you can simply choose not to discuss politics period. Its up to you.

Good luck Dan, its a promising site, just dont censor your members.

Yeah, I dont plan on doing any censoring. My thing is I have been spending hours and hours trying to get members to this site, and then I find out I have a member that unhappy that there are so many Bush supporters , that is bashing my site on one of the sites I am using to get my site known. I am all for free speech and have nothing against Bush or Kerry supporters. This member in question seems to think that its a bad site cause theres Bush supporters.

I understand this person hates Bush, but to go and Bash my site and trying to destroy its reputation before it really gets going isn't fair. There are more Bush supporters than Kerry on most sites I go on. I dont want to Ban this person, I just dont know what else to do you know? Shes going outside the site to other sites I advertised on telling people not to join because we are all no good Bush lovers, which we are not.

I see what you are saying.

Bashing the integrity of a site based on what certain members say or feel can be difficult, believe me, we have dealt with that on BC many times. Just simply remind this member and ALL you members that if heated political discussion is to be permitted on your site, a certain amount of maturity and respect for each others views will have to be maintained.

Thanks Jim, your a good man!! I think I will wait and see if this goes any farther, if it does I will lock the topic, if the bashing on other sites by this member continues the member will most likely be banned. I dont understand, of all the topics I offer, she is putting the site down for one topic. Oh well. Thanks for your help Jim.

Wisdom beyond MY years Jimbo, well said.
Dan, you don't want to make this person a martyr by banning them for expressing their opinon. Both you and your site will gain integrity by tolerance. Just my HO

I don't know how I missed this thread.

Dan, you have to find a balance between DISCUSSION and argument. Set your standards and rules. If the member in question wants to discuss issues, let her. If she crosses whatever line you draw for her, you can and should ban.

But you have to warn first to be fair. Don't censor anything unless it'* entirely offensive. Freedom of speech is valuable, and you'll regret trying to supress it in the long run.

In a nutshell:

1. Set firm expectations in posting behaviour and post the rules.
2. Warn when someone crosses the line.
3. Ban where appropriate (and bans don't have to be long-term or forever....we have several 'returned' members here).

Another little piece of advice is to ALWAYS back up your Moderators (at least in public), and YOU do the dirty work. Your Moderators MUST always have the respect of the members. Them good cop, you bad cop. It'* a dirty job, but you have to do it this way to keep a Forum running smoothly.
