Default NYC: Best/Affordable Places to Stay?

Hey folks, while my computer is down for the count, I have been lookin around for a vacation getaway for me and the missus

NYC is where we wanna go. I've looked a ton of hotels, mostly in the $130-$170 USD range, anyone that has ever been have any suggestions on where to stay? What to see? I know of to many places but on a limited time/budget trip we wanna set up a good schedule of places to see and things to do....Central Park, Times Square, Battery Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art etc. If you have been please share your stories and suggestions..

Thanx!

The closest I've been is Newark, NJ. Sorry. There are oodles of choices on where to go and what to see. Will this be the first time there for both of you?

**Missus, huh? Is it official yet? (just being nosey)

I just had a friend that was in NYC. He had a room somewhere that was 200$ a night, and he had mice in the room, was charged extra for things he didnt order, and had to ride the subway 2hrs to get to the place he was working.
One night there and he went somewhere else and got a nice suite(cant remember the name). From what I gathered from him was you either pay a lot for a crappy place, or spend a fortune for something worth the money, there is no middle ground.

I went to NY state on a family vacation 5 or 6 summers ago. We didn't spend a night in NYC, but we drove in, rode the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty, then drove out for the night. I can't give you any advice on accomodations for the evening, but the ferry is a free ride for pedestrians without cars, so by all means do it. You'll see the Statue and some good views of the Manhattan skyline, plus it'* a relaxing time to take some photos. If you're going soon and it'll be cold I don't know if this would be an option, but if you're waiting for warmer weather I would definitely look into it. Here'* a website with the ferry schedule http://www.si-web.com/SI-Ferry.html.
