The lens pictured prolly isn't the best for it, but try to find a lens with a really wide aperture, and you can really take some great photos of your car to make it stand out (kind of like the recent GXP photos with the shallow DOF).

Also, a wide angle lens is fun for car photos, because you can "stretch" or distort the car to your liking.

My wide angle lens starts at 17mm (28mm converted) and you can get up close and personal with the car ... were talking no more than a couple feet away, getting some great angles.

The Nikon 18-70mm is an excellent kit lens - the 18-135 pictured is good, but not quite I hear.

My wide angle is 19-35mm... equivalent to 12.7-23mm on Nikon 1.5x crop
