The silver "Z" in the picture measures the force that the car is pulling against it. the truck axle lets him floor his car and provide a load on it with the truck brakes. Then he can use the forward force he measured and his speed to calculate HP

1 HP = 33,000 ft-lbs per minute. the calculation is pretty easy from there, just convert miles per hower to feet per minute and you have it
