how unreliable is the 4 cyl engine?

My buddys ex drove one. They are good to about 95K at least hers was. Then exhast problems took hold. At 98K she had a serious exhaust leak that cost her $800. After that it started having fuel issues and would stall out in reverse and be a pita to restart. Vaccum leak? It ate a couple alts too. Overall from 60-90 it didn't cost her a dime in repairs then they came on all of a sudden.
