My friend had a board that would constantly do the same thing yours does with the locking up. The problem probably isn't the settings if you tried many different ones. My guess is the board is a lemon, and you may need to invest in a new one. Otherwise, try using nothing except the bare essentials of the PC, like no hard drive, and see what happens.

ECS boards have a terrible return rate. We used them at work (when we were in business ) and we RMAed over 50% of them. Return it for a replacement, you're bound to get a good one.

I've learned not to skimp on the motherboard. Upgrade to a better motherboard. Try this site for computer info.

hey all you computer gurus, I have some questions for you. What can I do to make my computer run faster???
I have a Gateway with a 366 Celeron, 256 RAM, 8.4gb HD, 2 CD-RW drives and Windows 98...Another problem I frequently have is that Explorer will perform an illegal operation and quit, or some other program will do something and ill get the Blue Screen and have to restart.

Question 2: I got a new CDRW drive awhile back, a Philips CDRW2400, and after I did about 2 or 3 benchmarking tests to see what it could do and stuff, it wont work anymore. It will not even read CDs. Does anyone have any suggestions for me or possibly a way to contact Philips tech support? I have been unable to find a # to reach them at.

With those specs, there is not much you can do. Those Explorer errors mean you have some problems with your core windows files, or something is conflicting. The easiest way out is to re-format your hard drive, or you can spend time trying to find the problem.

I would try staying away from Windows 98, there are a ton of bugs in it. XP or 2000 works great.

I see that you have a Celeron. Celerons are made to be slow, because they are the budget CPU. Amazingly, it will only cost you a few hundred to upgrade to a new system, and I would recommend that. You have a very old system.

For the CD thing, the benchmarking might have beaten the crap out of it. That stuff I would try to go to the manufacturer'* website and find some contact info and talk to them.

Hope this helps.

Yeah you can atleast get a basic 1ghz PC if you put it together for around 400-500bucks since you have a monitor already you would be all set. I recently put together a PC for my brother in college, its a 2.5ghz with 512 ram and a good radeon video card for gaming. Plus you know etheenet and stuff like that. I spent about 650 on it, but you can prolly cut your price down a bit by using your old tower and power supply and drives. Id say around 450 for a decent PC.
