I'm not familiar with foreign 4 bangers, but I can suggest the 2.4 Twin Cam DOHC (the upgraded Ouad 4) by GM or any of the EcoTec series from GM. Both have a TON of aftermarket support and GM even had a supercharger kit for the 2.4 that would give it 170 horses, but I know of people pushing 400+ hp out of them with a turbo.
