Welp... I'd take risky power windows over leaning over at 75mph to manually crank the passenger side...

Whether the window is used is not likely to affect the longevity of the regulator in the most common failure. There is a great deal of tension on the cables, and when the plastic that holds the cable into the sled dries out and cracks, the cable pulls out. That is likely to happen whether the window is used or not. In fact, most people who report the problem often say "the window was hardly, if ever, used." The plastic reel having issues is a result of repeated attempts to activate the window, after the cable is broken. It'* the effect, not the cause.

Edit - And you wont' have to roll the window down....it will fall down by itself. Also, for those who don't know - there is a techinfo article on a repair.

thats not as bad as my firebird window being toatally shattered . i cut a sheet of lucite to the general shape of my window and just ductaped it to it. the problem is, there was no top frame on top of the door, so it was a bit floppy.
it sounds like changing the motor/regulator on this car may be a bit harder than my fireturd'*. :?

Its not that bad, getting it back on right is the tricky part. Those clips by the "oh sh**" handle in the door are the worst.

Regardless, its inexpensive to fix if you go the ebay-regulator route or fix it yourself.

But what was GM thinking? If they designed the regulators properly they would have saved hunreds of thousands, if not millions on warranty costs. Oddly enough my 01 still has the original regulators all the way around.

A co-worker of mine has owned her 00 SE for the past 4 years and has never had a prooblem with the car whatsoever. I guess it is pretty random.

Hmmm, then maybe I should rig it so they don't fall down by themselves either!

I was in the back of Pat'* car.. tried to roll down the window and hollered up "Hey..unlock the windows so I can roll it down".

He looked at me as if I had suggested keying his car on every body panel. I doubt he'll ever unlock the rear windows.

eh, we roll ours down all the time.... if they go, they go and they will be fixed

The only reason that I don't like to roll the back windows down is because of the tint. they don't look right IMO half down with DARK tint. :?

I locked mine out too.
