Usually the taxes end up being more than the mortgage. If all I had to pay was the mortgage and insurance, and not the property tax, I'd have a lot smaller monthly payment

Your property taxes are more than your mortgage payment? Do you have a huge piece of property, a real long term mortgage, or just high taxes? My taxes are like 10-12% of my mortgage.

Chinski - the rural mid-Michigan market is SIGNIFICANTLY different than the housing costs and living expenses in the east, as pointed out already.
