Default No Myth Gas Mileage Boost *cringe*

all of you ex/current/future truckers, police, and/or safe drivers please don't kill me for this one, but i was once in a big crunch for money (had $20 to get me through two weeks of gas) and i had to make a trip to detroit (around 400 miles round trip) and couldn't see how i could afford the gas unless i resorted to extreme measures...so i drafted the whole way there, and the whole way back...averaged (no exag...no kidding) 39 mpg

got over 500 miles out of that tank (400 of those miles were drafting miles)

i don't recommend it...just an fyi.

oh, btw, i'll miss everyone when RITA heads through (read the NOTICE)
now before i start getting yelled at....

Current trucker here. It is annoying to have somebody uninvited drafting off you, it'* true when you can't see our mirrors we can't see you. But if you've got a C.B. give us a shout. Chances are you'll get a little help on wind resistance if it'* a decent straight stretch of highway if you just ask ahead of time.

That means you ride a trucks @$$ right?

plus you are going 65 if you are behind a truck so already at that speed you are getting 30mpg or so

yes...that'* right...as for the "65 mph" no. The trucks i followed consistently averaged 75 mph. i somehow caught speeding trucks both on the way up and on the way back. it is surreal to follow a semi going that fast. i'm sure it is ridiculously dangerous.

The really cool thing is, you just gotta ask! Thanks for the info. Not that it'* a practice, not do I do it. But you did just remind me that I drive enough highway miles to justify putting a CB back into my car.

I've followed rigs running empty across 84 through Pennsylvania at 80mph. Of course it was 1:00 in the morning and I was the only fourwheeler on the road. At those speeds it is very dangerous, but if you get close enough you can actually let off the gas and be pulled right along. It'* quite a rush, kind of gives an idea of how much drafting really can help in Nascar.

She did run a bit warmer than normal but not enough to concern me, the outside air temp was in the 40s so that helped quite a bit.

You still get air coming up from under the rear axel of the trailer, just the air coming off the top of the trailer has the same effect as a waterfall, the air behind the trailer is constantly sucked in by vaccum. Ive drafted trucks before on 94, but I used to have a CB at the time.
