Just how fast are cop cars?

Those crown victorias.....how fast are they I looked em up once and they only have like 200 hp with a 4.6l v-8 (the newer ones) and can series 2 bonne take em?

TrueWildMan 06-09-2004 03:55 PM

I don't know where you heard that from, but the torque is up close to 280-300. That's so they can do the rear deal to stop runaways. The car almost has a flat torque curve from 40 to 120. They're actually impressive.

Turbobird 06-09-2004 03:56 PM

Well, it's interesting that you ask that.

I don't know about the Crown Vics, but the Impalas aren't hot stuff. I used to work security at Kerr Industries (they outfit the police package Impalas), and all they have is HD suspension, an oil cooler, tranny cooler, and PS cooler. Other than that, it's tires, and a top speed limit of 124mph.

TrueWildMan 06-09-2004 03:57 PM

Was watching a documentary just the other night. The highway patrol car was just having it's way with the rear-end of a Hummer.

willwren 06-09-2004 04:03 PM

In Oregon, the State Police use the Crown Vics for normal patrol, but they have Camaro's for pursuit. Most Counties have the same setup as well.

Also, in the poll above, "most cars" are 4-bangers....

driverjohn2005 06-09-2004 04:07 PM

the "top of the line" motor only makes 239 hp. and 287 lb ft of torque. Not fast by any means but not a slug eather. But some are supercharged depending on what your local law enforcment perfers

Cruisers are faster then your normal sedan, but puruit cars (camaros, mustangs, firebirds) well get ya. Plus now in days it dont matter how fast your car is, there going to catch ya. even if you have a hyabusa(sp?). (like some idiot did where I lived a few weeks ago, 1 hour later he was caught)

 Nothing on the road is faster than a radio.

SSsuperchargedEi 06-09-2004 04:32 PM

the crown vics and impala's that are commonly used here are SLOW... my buddy took me for a ride in his impala and i laughed in his face and told him id outrun him(he's a county cop)... there's a couple of cougers, lx mustangs, lt1 z28s and one typhoon here in pa(state cars)...

harofreak00 06-09-2004 04:42 PM

and one typhoon here in pa(state cars)...
i had no idea what this was, so i did a search and read a review....

WOW i want one

a jimmy that does 0-60 in 5.3 sec

ssesc93 06-09-2004 04:48 PM

I remember last year I was doing 121mph on the expressway one night and the state police was at a dead stand still, He saw me and i for some reason thought he wasnt going to catch me. Well, i was wrong. i looked at my rear view and saw him gaining on me. he hasd to be doing at least 145mph to catch me. Well he stoppd me and gave my a 90mph in a 55mph. That was bad enough,. those car dont have a factory limiter.

he did have a crown vic as well.

Damemorder 06-09-2004 05:05 PM

I was doing 20 over one night, had an officer go over a bridge above me, drive another 1/4 mile, then he could get on the frontage, to drive another half mile, to turn around, to come back. He got me before my turn a mile and a half from the bridge. They're fast.

Twister97 06-09-2004 05:12 PM

Plus, its not their car. There going to drive fast and hard just about every time.

SSEi95 06-09-2004 05:25 PM

My roomate had a Grand Marquee (CV with options) until recently. We also have a freind how has installed lights and cameras and stuff in squad cars for a while. The cars are fairly stock now-a-days. Their big advantage omes with all the coolers they get (like tranny, steering, oil, etc). Most stock cars will blow their engines after running 100+ for any length of time, but the CV's can hadle it because of the extra cooling. Like mentioned before, if they need a fast car, they use a Camaro or a Stang to get you.

PS: I've seen a GTP (looked stock) outrun a squad car on COPS before. They got busted because the lady driving it put it in the ditch. Normally cops just wait til your cars blows up then they just roll up and tag you.

TrueWildMan 06-09-2004 05:28 PM

I had a '93 Police Interceptor Crown Vic, and it was no slouch. I was actually impressed.

Rosco the Iroc 06-09-2004 06:16 PM

According to a display @ a VA state fair a few years back they(VA STP) are limited to 135mph. After slowing to 80 and finding out I WAS ( I did not know) being chased the PA trooper asked/told me " I've had this cruiser maxed out @115 for 6 miles chaseing you- how fast where you going?" That was in '89 hehe

Sol 06-09-2004 06:24 PM

It doesn't matter how fast they are. Like said above, you can never outrun a radio.

SSE14U24ME 06-09-2004 09:10 PM

In reality it doesn't really matter how fast they can go because they have radios.

.. and choppers.. or news choppers... ( Remember OJ?? ) and spike strips.. and multiple vehicles so they can take turns and not run out of gas.. fast as fast can be.. you're not going to get far when you're on empty

1992 trofeo 06-09-2004 09:35 PM

Once they get your plate.. find out its valid... They'll just send you a ticket in the mail or meet you back at your house anyway...

Burgundy_Boat 06-09-2004 09:41 PM

the police package crown vics are mid 16 sec cars. the 9C1 Caprices were mid-low 15 sec cars. the B4C Camaros are mid 13 second cars. and that about covers the most common cop cars

MOS95B 06-10-2004 01:46 AM

From my experience, it depends on what the local police are willing to spend (or whoever gives them their budget). There is no one particular police package. They can order one from the factory, then farm it out from there locally if they want.

Or do like they supposedly do in Vegas, used confiscated cars that have already been modded. Put a bad guy in jail, put a car in the fleet...

therealscu03 06-10-2004 05:28 AM

Noone really uses the caprices anymore, they stopped making them with the police package, so every one uses the vics. I have heard from some cops that they dont like the impalas because they are too small and are front wheel drive. The vics will do around 130 or so, when they are newer, but start to slow down when they get older, i rode with a guy whos car was maybe 5 yrs old or something, 120000 miles and it would only do 113. Compared to most vehicles they arent that fast, but they have had a lot of training for defensive driving and stuff like that, and like its been mentioned before, there are a lot more of them so they can switch off whos pursuing, and you cant outrun the radio!

FiReDeViL 06-10-2004 05:42 AM

one of the cities here in MI has a viper pursuit car... thing BLASTED past me on the highway one day... i was like "wow someone is askin to ...get...a...." and trailed off as i saw the lights flashing

they stopped making the caprice period, but there are still some around. the local PD here still has some

TrueWildMan 06-10-2004 09:07 AM

My Crown Vic did 128 with 102,000 miles on the ticker.

We have a D.A.R.E. car here that is a drug raid confiscation. It's a '69 Camaro all tricked out with lights. The sucker is FAST!! When I had my Torino, I got the ol' finger pointing down saying "slow down" from him. It was GREAT!! :P

not a problem, but just remember, these are real money prices, not play money, so that nice LT1 powered 95 caprice for $5,500 is actually closer to $350,000 your money, just remember that and you'll be fine
