Take the summons into work today to show your boss. You should be paid from your job just as if you were at work.
You have to show up at the courthouse unless the summons is worded differently.
Take a book to read.

Let me get this straight. You got the summons in the mail and it told you to call the night before you're to appear, right? Then, when you called, the recording said you don't have to appear the following day?
If so, that'* the standard practice. Do exactly as the recording said. You don't have to appear. If you do show up, they won't pay you for your time, nor pay you mileage.
Simply call back the next evening that they instruct you to (based on the recording you listened to the previous day).

That'* how it works here, but you have to call in every day.
If there are no jury cases at trial, it'* business as usual for you. The court system has to have a pool of potential jurors from which to choose, so they tell a group to "be ready" just in case.

when i did it, i called the number the nght before and did what it said to do.
work would only pay the difference if i actually got paid for going to jury duty that day -- i.e. if i wasnt supposed to be there according to the recording and i showed up anyway, i got zero dollars for it.
