isnt college football great?
another saturday down, and after a scare for OU, they still come out on top -- after much-needed fourth quarter performance. USF fell, and not surprisingly, Florida beat out Kentucky. and did i mention that Auburn flubbed an opportunity to beat LSU? a last-second touchdown saved them, but honestly, Auburn couldnt do anything in the second half.
my new top 10:
1. Ohio State
(I still have reservations about putting Ohio State here, but none of the top 3 looked particularly impressive this weekend.)
2. LSU
(They got a scare tonight, but they did win. And they dominated the second half when they needed to, after a less-than-impressive first half.)
3. Oklahoma
(The plus: they held Iowa State to 7 points. The minus: Iowa State held OU'* much-heralded offense to 17 points. Theres a reason Iowa State is 1-7, and its not officials. The fact OU just came off close games against Texas and Missouri is the silver lining here, OU seems to have taken this week off, for the most part, but having learned something from Colorado, still got off the bus.)
4. Boston College
5. South Florida
(They lost to . . . Rutgers? USF has shown they have the coaching and they have the talent, but even they are not immune to looking past opponents.)
6. Oregon
7. West Virginia
8. Florida
(Florida beat Kentucky in a shoot-out, which makes me wonder slightly about the defense in the SEC.)
9. Missouri
(Still, their only loss is to OU. They held the immensely successful TexTech offense to just 10 points while still having a field day on offense.)
10. Kansas
(One of the few undefeateds left, and their offense is nothing to sneeze at.)

Stanford does have a way with college football:
much as i hate to say it, doesnt looks like OU has even a remote chance at playing in the NC, in spite of and partially because of all the upsets this year.
the lesson for OU? every quarter matters. even if you're up by 24-10, if you fail to play the final quarter, you will lose -- more than that, that failure to win the quarter could very well cost you the opportunity to play for the NC. in retrospect, it shouldve been predictable.
Outscoring their first four opponents 246-47 gets your [first-string] offense out of the habit of playing for four quarters (take note, Ohio State). Enter a team which will force you to play for four quarters, and your first-string offense sits out the fourth against your better wishes. Remove that quarter against Colorado, and OU is undefeated and undisputed Number 1 right now (except for some delusional Ohio State Fans).
Is it a shocker? not really.
Is it a shame? most definitely. as an OU fan, im getting very tired of saying "Next year . . ." but thats what happens when you win the NC your second year as head coach, get Jason White as your QB, and then get completely dominated by USC in that years National Championship. That sort of set the bar for the next couple years for OU -- the team that has a huge amount of talent, one of the best coaches in the nation, but somehow chokes when we least expect it.
Silver lining? OU looks to take home the big 12 championship (though, we'll see what Kansas and Missouri have to say about that) and play in the Consolation Bowl (perhaps). Our quarterback is arguably the most promising quarterback in the NCAA right now.
and its not over yet. Ohio State faces what looks to be a tough game against Michigan in a few weeks, Boston College plays Virginia Tech this week, Arizona State and Oregon play each other in two weeks (and both have yet to play USC, a team which is definitely looking to prove something right now, but time will tell if they have the talent to do so). and in a season where App State can beat #5 Michigan, Stanford can beat #1 USC, and Rutgers can beat #2 USF . . . its far from over. and there are no gimmies.
im proud to be an OU fan, but we are NOT the no1 team in the nation. i dont really know who is, (OSU? come on. Boston College? give me a break. LSU? maybe.) but i think if OU were to get to it right now, with their defense as questionable as they are, OU would get schooled. we dont have it all together yet.
maybe next month.

This has been an interesting year so far. Now, let me throw this out there. What happens to Florida if they win out the next three games. They have 3 SEC east games. That would currently keep them #1 in the SEC east. In the SEC west, LSU is #1. That would put UF vs. LSU in the SEC championship. What happens if Florida wins out and wins the SEC title against LSU?

Ohio State, Boston College, Kansas/Oklahoma [pending Big 12 Championship], and even (and my fingers hurt as they type it) USC.
its a real long shot. florida'* defense scares me. i dont think florida really has a shot at a NC, but you never know. its been a strange year, and i'm sure it will only get better.
