Default Internet sharing

So, I have two computers, one internet connection, and one modem. I do NOT have a router, but I do have a hub and a wire long enough to reach to the second computer. The one I am posting on now has teh internet working already (obviously) so can i hook up the second computer to share this internet connection without a router?

I think there is a way to share internet without a router but one of the computers needs to have 2 nic cards installed. A hub alone wont do it.

Hmmm...not sure about the NIC cards.
Thought about getting a router but honestly even $30 is a stretch right now.
As far as sharing, I tried doing some kind of Internet Sharing Connection Wizard thing and it wouldn't work and said 'd have to do it manually.

It depends on how you connect to the internet currently.

If by telephone modem then a hub will work provided both computers have network capability (by card or integrated into the motherbd) Use the internet connection sharing wizard in XP. The computer that accesses the internet will need to be on (but not neccesarily online) for the 2nd computer to 'passthru'. The first computer will know to dialup if the 2nd computer requests internet access and its not already connected.

If by cable modem then a hub will work with extra effort. First we'll need to know how the cablemdem is connected to the computer. (USB or Network cable) If by usb then you may be able to run a network cable to the other computer. Some cablemodems do work like this but you may need to contact your ISP to get 2 IP addresses assigned. If its extra $$$ then don't (see below) otherwise you will need two networks ports on the primary and one on the secondary computer and use ICS wizard again.

A router is recommended thou. I do have a spare one sitting around I could offer up. Its a Linksys BEFSR41 I beleive and was working fine when unplugged.

Cya soon.

Goto Newegg.com

Look for Wired Routers and there are some that are cheap for under or around $20 shipped
