Insurance RANT

Now, I'm usually a passive character, until tonight.

I was generally happy with the $161.60 per month that I was paying for my old 1989. So, here is the situation. When I first did the insurance last May I was 23, single, living at home, first car, primary driver etc.

Total $1962 a year

Today, I got my renewal forms. Its jumped to $227.50 a month or an ass whomping $2725.65 a year  for a car that is worth no more then $1000. Lets see, no claims, no fines, no points, still single, 1 year older (both me and car). Not sure why the jump. But lets say its time to look for another insurance company.

An 1989 SE....$2725 a year...unf***in-believable

BTW any CDN members of BC know a good website to get quotes

DeathRat 05-27-2003 12:04 AM

I can relate to your Insurance problems too! My renewal rates went up 50%! Plus my company wants to cancel my Full Coverage & leave me with just PLPD because my 92 SE just turned TEN! I also found a couple of "FALSE" Claims on my record I'm trying to get cleared up too from past Insurance Companies, as these are screwing up my chances of finding a better company & getting cheaper insurance. BTW! I'm 39, Marrried for 11 years, have two boys, no tickets or demerits, one accident that was 50/50 fault, & one accident that was 0% fault.

I am so glad I have USAA. The insurance rate for my 89, liablity only, is about 25 dollars a month.

Hailey 05-27-2003 12:15 AM

Man, that sucks! Find a better company. We tried 5 before we found one that gave us a quote of less than $1500 a year (GE Auto Insurance...$950 a year for full coverage, including $500,000 liability  ). Every company rates differently...there has to be something better out there. Good luck!

bonnie94ssei 05-27-2003 12:29 AM

When I first bought my Bonne in Sept. 2001 I was paying $239 a month, and my record was perfect! That was horrible. Payed it for a few months. Then I switched on my parents to save some $$. Payed $150 a month, then it dropped to $98! So I was happy, but then the renewal went up to $150 again a month later.

I just gave them my last grade report which will lower it some, and since I just graduated from college my company said the rate decrease from my report card will last till I'm 25. Sounds good.

And though I didn't get a ticket from my accident in Feb., I did hit her from behind, but my insurance hasn't gone up. I was surprised, but I'm not complaining.

Good luck. I hope you find a better company or something :? :)

The first thing I have to do tomorrow is get in touch with my insurance broker and find out what happened and why the huge jump.

But to have your accident benefit premiums jump form $840 to $1321, property damage for from $250 to $305 and have bodily injury go from $685 to $928 is a little weird.

Should I be expecting an $800 dollar jump every year??????? foo this

Azwed 05-27-2003 12:52 AM

your rates should be going down as you age not up. You are almost 25 and then you should see a large rate reduction.

LowLyfe83 05-27-2003 01:40 AM

Dang man, thats rediculous. i feel for you.... i tried to get insurance on my 87 nissan and they wanted $1600 for 6 months liability!! what a rip! i kept searching and found a real good company, which wanted $100/month for liability, which is still a lil high but im just turning 20. clean record, have had tickets and wrecks (wrecks not either of my fault) but all were signed off on my own recognance(sp?) The bonneville will cost a little more, $152/month for liability, but its 5 years newer and a full size car.

willwren 05-27-2003 01:53 AM

$62 a month for full coverage. But I'm old (96 or something, right?) and I don't get caught very often :P

bonnie94ssei 05-27-2003 02:21 AM

Man Will! Can't wait till I get old!!

I haven't been caught yet either.

zzzzzeke 05-27-2003 08:14 AM

yep i got one ticket and right around $100 a month

sse1990 05-27-2003 09:02 AM

Well I was just watching somethign on the news about that last night. Since insurance companies use the stock market to make money and it hasn't been doign that great, we can pretty much all ( in Ontario anyhow) expect a 30% increase.

That really sucks. I bet you will see more and more people driving around with little to no insurance because of it.

Jim W 05-27-2003 09:44 AM

I emailed my broker regarding this gross injustice of insurance coverage. I wonder what shovel full of crap he is going to feed me

Oh well, I suppose its more about insuring the person then it is insuring the vehicle

smellbird 05-27-2003 11:36 AM

Wow! I only pay 664.50 a YEAR! And I'm 22! Clean record and a few endorsements help.

The insurance company is just trying to milk you for all your worth before you turn 25.

SSEi95 05-27-2003 11:54 AM

I'm 25 and pay approx $140 a month for good full coverage of the SSEi and liability on a '81 f-150 4x4. Do some looking around, they're trying to rip you off.

parallelcircuits 05-27-2003 11:55 AM

WOW!!! I have to agree. You are being ripped off. I pay around $450 every three months about $150.00 a month for both my wife's 2002 Hyundai Elantra and my 1996 Pontiac Bonneville and BOTH are full coverage. My wife has 1 accident on her record even and we are both under 25. She's 23 and I am 22.

Jim W 05-27-2003 12:24 PM

I just checked out www.insurancehotline.com, and apparently my lowest possible rate that I can get in Ontario is $2629.67 a year....which is about $100 less....not really worth the switch to another company.

Oh well, I suppose I'll have to take the $227 per month hit and deal with it. I'm not going to stop driving but it wll affect my modification budget for 2003.

Whadda scam....I can't imagine what its goin to be when I get the SSEi, I had better wait until I hit 25, buy my loft, get married.... :x LOL, that just introduces new expenses

Burgundy_Boat 05-27-2003 04:39 PM

umm... DAMN... I'm 17, male and insured on 3 vehicles, 2 '95 SE's and one '89 Aerostar, and I have State Farm... they only charge me $130 or so a month, did i menition that i usually drive like i stole it???

Jim W 05-27-2003 08:37 PM

Not much better then mine eh Alan?

Oh well, gotta do it, pay up...no choice. Its illegal to drive in Ontario without insurance, is it the same in Alberta?

Mayhem_3 05-27-2003 09:01 PM

Mine for my 98 ssei is about 370 per 6 months for full coverage. My 88 was about 170 for 6 months for straight liability.
