What do you use to file the taxes with? Is it a program, or do you do it with a pencil/paper. What kind of guarantee do you give? Do you have a safe place to store personal information from customers for three years? Is it operated out of your own home?

I don't know. I prepare taxes myself through one of the large franchise companies and you have to know a LOT of tax laws/regulations/rules to even prepare taxes successfully. I wouldn't trust someone that does it on the side. not with my SSN, and all personal information. Way too risky, no matter the cost.

I use plain pencil and paper. Afterwards I file it online if you want your money back in 8-15 days, if not, then I mail it. For security protection on my computer, I have the AVG 7(anti-virus), its up-to-date, Mcafee software firewall, a hardware router with firewall capabilities, and Spy Sweeper software. I am a PC repair tech and a senior in at DeVry university for IT- Networking, so I'm very computer literate and you don't have to worry about information being stolen from my computer. I haven't completed my last year, I'm currently in my sophomore year for Business and going to continue with that.

I know what you mean, back in '02 I had someone prepare my taxes for me because I wasn't getting a lot back and I didn't know anything about it. Now, I've been filing taxes for about 4 years now. It'* just something I picked up. I make about $700 around tax time. If it'* something I don't know how to do I assume I know how and learn my first time whether it'* home repair, taxes, car maintenance, lambo doors, audio/video installation in cars, custom kicks, or whatever. Thats what you call a legal hustle . Then after I learn I run into people who needs the same service and get paid off the labor . Oh and I do make custom kicks, never mind those shoestrings

You realize that you're asking people who don't know you to give you their most personal information? It'* not just a matter of how secure your computer is. You're asking a LOT of trust from people (who don't know you) that you will not share their information, or use it yourself for other reasons. I'm NOT saying you would at all, I don't think you would. But preparing taxes as a "hobby" (for lack of a better word) without being a CPA or other qualified professional, and doing it for people you merely know through an internet forum, is probably not going to amount in much business coming your way.

There is MANY MANY MANY tax laws. even good CPAs miss some sometimes.
I dont see how anyone will trust you on the internet.
Even Turbo Tax messes up about 50-100 Returns out of 50mill each year...

Im sorry but unless you can show proof that your a CPA or have some Tax related Cert. or Degree i dont see how anyone is going to trust you. unless you know them already.

It'* a lot more than that. even when you go to the large companies that do it, the main goal is to get atleast 50% of all returns 100% correct. (it'* a lot harder than you would think.) Unless you have great software that finds all the deductions you're entitled to, it'* not really worth it to pay someone to file for you, unless you're looking for the bare minimum.

Thats why it states "It'* worth a try" in my topic. Most of my business comes from people I know and the people they know. I was thinking about getting certified in tax deductions, but I'm already in school for business and I really don't have the extra time for it.

EDIT: I guess some people see doing taxes is hard as some people think changing the heater core out a Bonneville is hard.
