My suggestion, don't get a Dell (laptop). My suggestion for a PC: Don't look at JUST Dell. There are a lot of companies, and Dell isn't the one and only option. I always build my own PCs, so I wouldn't ever buy a pre-manufactured PC. I'm sure someone can chime in on what kind of PC to buy, but I would just look at everything.

A budget would help if you're willing to provide that kind of info, and what you want to do with your PC.

Look at some of the refurb boxes or aka scratch and dent, they have the same warranty as new and several hundred cheaper.

get at least 2gb ram if running vista. more the better.

if laptop make sure you get a 7200rpm hdd.

dells new 24" "cheap" monitor is not that shabby. if going 28" check out the viewsonic on newegg.

get a high end logitech mouse and/or keyboard...

generally buying a dell refurbished is cheaper than building your own by at least a couple hundred bucks. new systems are about the same as building your own.

m1330 is a pretty sweet laptop. any other models..go with dell if the price is right

For pre-manufactured, I like HP/Compaq.

I have a 2 notebook computers: Dell (1year old) and a Hewlett Packard (going on 3 years old) and both are capable machines. We're having an OS issue with the HP, and the keyboard has been replaced twice under warranty (self inflicted damage), HP warranty has been hassle free and the Dell has been perfect for the year that its been in use.

We had an IBM that my gf used in school, besides being bulky it also performed well.

Take a look at what it will be used for and get the proper hardware to meet that criteria. Frankly, who makes it, is not that big of an issue. Its all the same at the end of the day IMO.

Custom-building your laptop (HP/Compaq) at www.hpshopping.com is generally cheaper than buying pre-configured. Custom building is where the instant rebates are at, including on monitors and printers.

well i got a GX270 for my brother and was impresed with it
normaly i do build my own machines but the gateway laptop that was my wifes is on its last leggs and needs replaced and i'm not going down that route again but i'm looking in the used/ scratch and dent side of things but the 24 has me hooked any how i am looking at a vista box with atleast a 3 gig proc yadda yadda and some where around a grand it isint going to be done till after the first of the year but then again i might build one i got a P4 ht 3.06 siting on the desk only prob is it is a socket 478 so that limits me on upgrades in the future

this is what i'm running now

witch is a socket 939 so not mutch upgrades there either might get a X2 proc and the other 8800gtx card and that is as far as it will go in this configuration

5the bigest thing i was looking at was the suport thing i have heard great things about dell and enjoyed working on my brothers computer
