The article is a bit misleading. Real dilithium crystals can only be found outside Paramount Studios. Any other studips, and you can be sure they are knock-offs....

it should be noted that Federation Starships no longer dispose of used dilithium. it was believed that dilithium only occurred naturally (which led to their being valued at roughly 300 times their weight in diamonds), however recent discoveries have led to its being synthesized.* As such, most Federation bases no longer dispose of used dilithium, and instead recrystallize it using gamma radiation.
