I can't believe this

I was fired. Why? I asked for a day off. A sunday, none-the-less. My project is postponed indefinitely. I'm not gonna be able to move out of my parents. I have no clue how I'm gonna pay my bills. There was no warning, no probation, no verbal signs, hell, people have even been telling me I'm doing a good job! I've been early EVERY day, I've done everything they've told me to and they haven't told me ONCE that I've been doing something wrong. I have known for a while that one of my sales manager has had it in for me. He's the one who fired me. I don't even think he had the authority to. Is there any legal action I can take? Since there was no grounds, and there was no warning? And even more important, WHAT THE FCUK AM I GOING TO DO. I'm not happy. I'm not happy at all. Happy is not in the forecast. How? How? Why did this happen? To me? I don't get it. I know I'm weird and that some people don't get along with me, but does that mean they have to ruin my LIFE? I think not... Now I have a dying tranny with no income. I'm researching how to sell a kidney. I'm out of ideas. I think I might have to force myself to go to school, even though I had such a bad experience. It's unavoidable, for me at least. I'm going to have to sell my car. I don't know how I'm supposed to pay for it. Let alone that and insurance. Why me? Oh god, I've started being emo. I shouldn't even post this, it's all a bunch of crap. Well, at least it's helping me let off some steam. I feel beaten. Laziness, I'm coming back to you...

crash93ssei 08-21-2007 08:52 PM

dude that totally sucks :(

As far as you being hard to get along with... I don't see where :? I find you to be a very very easy person to get along with.

I know it sounds pathetic, but keep your chin up.. better times will come. ;)

bandit 08-21-2007 08:53 PM

Contact you local DOL
You should be able to get unemployment for that ;)

Far as is it legal.. If Ohio a "At will state"? if so.. then he had every legal right to fire you at any time for any reason.
But you should be able to get unemployment

petraman 08-21-2007 08:54 PM

The thing that sucks was that I was actually doing my job RIGHT. I was out there talking to customers, I was calling people, and all the sudden this hits me.

crash93ssei 08-21-2007 08:55 PM

I would try to VERY CALMLY go and talk to someone higher up then the person that fired you and ask for an honest explanation as to why you were fired.

petraman 08-21-2007 08:57 PM

I was planning on calling the GM tomorrow, but he probably won't do anything since he rarely cares about his employees (or so I've been told)

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 08:59 PM

I'd definitely think you should get unemployment. :? Did he say you were "fired" or "laid off?" Either way, it's one of the worst fears I think anyone has, me being one of them. What was your job and have you thought about what your next job step may be? Sorry to hear about this. I'd definitely make sure you're getting unemployment. If you were "fired" for no reason then you obviously have to take some action. If you were laid off, you should get compensation.

EDIT: Wait...so he said you were fired for asking for a day off? Was this before or after that day?

leftd90 08-21-2007 08:59 PM

yeah if anything, someone owes you a explanation atleast.

Sorry about the bad turn of events but it can only get better from here.

tallbump 08-21-2007 09:00 PM

I'm with Ryan, then if that doesn't work definitely look into unemployment. Each State has different laws, but seems like you should be bale to collect. If they fight it you may even be entitled to a free Attorney. I had one before and she was good.
And, if you go to school that would work great. Sometimes you even get more or can get it for longer if you are in school.

petraman 08-21-2007 09:01 PM

He said fired. The only bit about the unemployment is this... Since it was a car dealer, it was all commission, how do I get unemployment for an all-commission job?

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:03 PM

Screw that....take his ass to court! What was his explanation!!?

petraman 08-21-2007 09:05 PM

That I asked to leave early (bullshit, I asked to leave when I was SCHEDULED to leave) and that I didn't "put my all" into my job. This was the guy who said I needed to leave my friends and family behind if I want to succeed in this business.

singscountry1967 08-21-2007 09:06 PM

Petey! WHY are you giving up already? If you were one of my kids...I'd say, "Don't be such a weanie! You found one job...you can go find another." :slap:
Be thankful you HAVE parents to live with...be thankful you have a car to sell (though I think that would be a dumb idea at this point) ...be thankful you have the option to go back to school if you wish....be thankful you have two healthy kidneys.

The reality of it is this: Losing a job at this point in your life is nothing compared to what may come your way as you get older. Learn to manage diversity instead of letting it manage you. ;)

PS...you have to work a certain number of weeks to be eligible for unemployment.

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:09 PM

Tracy does speak a lot of truth and I agree.

You have every right to be upset though. And ASKING for a day off seems like the lamest reason to fire someone. It's not like you even got the time off, you just ASKED for it. :shake:

If he basically said your job is more important than your family he's the epitome of dealer scum and you're better off not working under him.

MyLittleBlackBird 08-21-2007 09:10 PM

quote from some thing I found.... I don't really understand it, but it seems that your employer may terminate your employment at any time. EMPLOYER.... I'd go to the top of the ladder and don't piss with any middlemen.

The employment-at-will doctrine
The general rule in Ohio is that “unless otherwise agreed, either party
to an oral employment-at-will agreement may terminate the employment
relationship for any reason which is not contrary to law.”1 There is a strong
presumption in favor of an at-will contract “unless the terms of the contract
or other circumstances clearly manifest the parties’ intent to bind each other.”2
The Ohio Supreme Court has held, subject to the exceptions described below,
that the right of an employer to terminate an employee’s employment for any
cause at any time is absolute and cannot be limited by principles that protect
persons from gross or reckless disregard of their rights, or from willful,
wanton, or malicious actions or acts done intentionally, with insult, or in bad
faith.

tallbump 08-21-2007 09:11 PM

Good points. But it still sucks what happened. Guy sounds like an a$$. I worked as a lot attendant at a used car dealership years ago and the manager was a total a$$. I will never buy a car from them as long as he works there.

That's what I thought, and you're right, I'm only 19 and I don't have many responsibilities. When it comes down to it, I just want to be able to save some money and do some of the things I love. I do have my family, and I've taken them for granted. In fact, I've taken advantage of them. I don't really want to go back. The hours were HORRIBLE (60 hours a week), and when it comes down to it, I've been making 5-6 dollars an hour. This is a badly needed wake-up call.

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:16 PM

Well then, I'd take this as a blessing and go find something better. IMO that job was holding you back. But you're young enough to make me feel old and I'm only 26 (almost), you have a lot of time.

petraman 08-21-2007 09:18 PM

So what's the best way to make money (even if it isn't a lot) without a college education while going to school?

xDRx 08-21-2007 09:20 PM

McDonalds. Mow Lawns.

Its what I do. I rake in about $700-900 a month depending on how many hours I get/steal and mowing.

petraman 08-21-2007 09:24 PM

Tried foods, failed miserably, mowing lawns? I probably couldn't stand (I hate hot weather, haha)

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:28 PM

Detailing cars, if you're as anal about detailing as I am, that is a great thing to do. I started my own detailing business and did it for 3 years.

EDIT, oh crap nevermind you hate hot weather. Well at least for the fall, it would be a good gig and it wouldn't be so hot.

I'll be starting up my detailing business again soon and into the fall before winter hits.

Of course, benefits are good too so a job on the books is a good idea. But you should be on your parents still correct?

tripscarcare95 08-21-2007 09:28 PM

Take advantage of your hard time, I was making $6 an hour when I was 10 years old, Theres a reason for everything good and bad that happens in life, Put your head up and find another job or go get a college education, You have nothing to lose you have a roof over your head and nobody to support but yourself, Best of the luck, theres always going to be something better around the corner just wait! 8)

If you like your car alot, why not learn how to detail cars? Set up some flyers and off you go, good old fashion income

This is something that I was told years ago and I believe still holds very true

Do you know what the difference is between a sucessfull person and an unsucessfull person is:?

A sucessfull person is willing to do what an unsucessfull person isn't.
;)

petraman 08-21-2007 09:32 PM

One of my very good friend once ruled the detail market in Granville, but I think since he moved out I should try again.

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:37 PM

I made darn good money (though I didn't charge enough) all by word of mouth every summer. It was all in addition to my regular summer job. It's worth a shot, you don't have to pay taxes, :shhh: and it's fun...

...until you start getting the most disgusting, dirtiest cars you've ever seen.

TJ'sblackbonne 08-21-2007 09:41 PM

Well, i just went through almost the same thing. But i came to work and was told i was laid off, no real reason or anything. It scared the hell out of me. Then i put my name in other places and everything and it wasnt looking good, on friday they called back and told me they needed me back and today asked me how much overtime i could do this week and i said all you can give me. So i have to say, it will come around, something will get you through it.

As for the kidney, what blood type are you, drinker? over weight? smoker? you work out regularly?? How much you got to get?? Hey..... you never know if you are going to need one, might as well buy it and keep it if i need it

TJ'sblackbonne 08-21-2007 09:43 PM

PS- listen to pete he makes sense. Detailing cars is a good way to make some money, and word of mouth is the best advertisment.

I have only seen pics of his cars (well got a little peak at his old car), and i would drive the 5 hours to have him detail my cars LMAO :D

bonnie94ssei 08-21-2007 09:48 PM

And I got returning customers for 3 years +. I got $20 tips frequently. Hey, it's what you know, it's not risky at all, and you don't have to worry about resumes and interviews, etc.

Would your parents mind you doing peoples' cars at their house? I did my work in my parents' driveway so it was very convenient.

Thanks TJ...anytime, come on over. lol

TJ'sblackbonne 08-21-2007 10:12 PM

:D

xDRx 08-21-2007 10:14 PM

Well whatever happens, Best of luck Petraman. Don't let it get u down. You WILL find something... Even if eventually..... ;)

tallbump 08-22-2007 07:18 AM

The detailing business makes sense to me. My father-in-law does it too. I think he undercharges, but then he usually gets tips. And, like mentioned above, it's all word of mouth.

Darrel 08-22-2007 07:40 AM

not sure what kind of area you live in but you may look into some sort of internship. Thats how my company hires people here... you pretty much start out as an intern and move up from there. Interns usually don't make as much as a direct hire but it still isn't bad. I'm working a job as a lab tech, you don't need college degrees for this, and the money is darn good too!

GonneVille 08-22-2007 05:46 PM

If you liked the job, you might try throwing some apps in at other dealers. Make sure you talk to a manager when you turn it in, and explain the situation. You got a raw deal. If you want, I can post your situation over to Columbus Racing and a couple other local car clubs.

harofreak00 08-22-2007 05:55 PM

IMO, get out of the car dealership world, $5-6 an hour @ 60hrs a week  thats bullshit. I made more delivering papers when I was 14.

I would suggest looking to local manufacturers that don't even have any advertised openings. Usually you can make $10 starting working a line of some type. Here in mankato, there are thousands of these jobs to support the thousands of students in this college town.

There is always telemarketing :?

roadtech195 08-22-2007 05:58 PM

Forget your old boss, he is a lame a$$. The only reason you where fired is because you are a well spoken person and probably did better at your job than he could. He felt threatened by you is all it is man. Plenty of work is out there and waiting :)

Hans 08-22-2007 07:44 PM

My friend was making 20 an hour selling cars and he was never above the middle of the guys. this was at a GM dealership.

Work a phone job. Tech support is more fun than customer service.

Mopar MAN 08-22-2007 08:20 PM

Hit the temp agencies, find a job driving a forklift. There are literally HUNDREDS of companies hiring lift ops in the Franklin/Fairfield/Licking county area right now. Pay is pretty decent, usually 9.00-9.50 for fitst time trainees. And lift work is usually pretty easy, if you don't mind breaking a sweat every day!

tallbump 08-22-2007 09:51 PM

I drove a fork lift for a while. That was one of the coolest jobs I ever had. Wish I hadn't have been so stupid and screwed that one up. I Did that alot when I was younger.
Not sure about the laws in your state, but what about a CDL. You can make good money just staying local. My cousin gets $15.00 an hour to drive a cement mixer.

Darrel 08-22-2007 10:29 PM

if you are willing to never be at home very much i hear OTR truck drivers are in high demand. my room mate was going to go to work for CR England as a driver but he decided he had too much road rage to drive a big rig... (probably a good choice for him ;)). I don't think that pays too bad.
