Default how long should a sprain last?

about a 1-1/2 months ago i was snow skiing and fell as i was trying to go up an powder covered ice patch... i fell and landed directly on my left thumb.. i believe it bent back to my forearm, but im not sure i didnt see it, but thats what it felt like

it did not feel broken, but i have never broken a bone in my body

i could/can still move it freely, but there is like one movement that just kills me, also if it gets bumped wrong, or i have to move my hand fast, it feels like its gonna burn and fall off...

how long does a bad sprain usually last...
how would i know if its broken...

Danm, when you describe that "burning" pain, it sure sounds like something might be up. Have a tuning fork or something of the like that vibrates at super high frequency (might wanna talk to the g/f - jk )?
I know sports med doctors use tuning forks to diagnose fractures cause it'll hurt like hell if you got one. I'd be a little suspicious at this point though if it hurts like that after this long :(

Edit - 128Hz is the frequency they test with.

I fell on my ring finger and it swelled up and was sore for 3 months. It was only a sprain though.

i sprained my thumb back in June and i just now can move it full rotation without hurting a little. It wasn't broken... i didn't do anything for it no casts or braces. But if i try to crack it like i can my other thumb, i can't and i can still feel a little tiny bit of pain...

Considering it'* your thumb...it makes sense it would take longer to heal unless you stopped using that hand (unlikely). The only true way to know if it is broken is xrays, and even then it may be hard to tell if it'* a hairline crack along the length of a bone (sort of like when you twist a green tree branch and it splits along the length of the branch.)

Not to freak you out or anyting but.. my friend fell off his bike onto his thumb once and actually severed a ligament in it. To fix it they took one of the ligaments in the index finger and attached it to the severed one.
So basically, if it dosen't go away or get better in two to three weeks as mentioned it could be bad.

When I broke my leg, they were talking about breaks and sprains and stuff, and sprains can actually take longer to heal than breaks, they were saying that a bad sprain can take up to a year to heal.

I'd get in and see a doctor. It should have healed by now if it was just sprained. You don't know if the damage will affect you later down the road.... Know what I mean?
