Default hosting your own website

I would like to host my own website. Only problem is, I don't know what program you use to do it. I know that there are programs out there that are free, and allow you to dedicate a drive on your computer to be a website. I'm getting high speed internet through a new provider so I'm going to lose my webspace that I use to store my signature pictrues, etc. It'd just be easier to keep the pictures on one drive on the computer, and have it be hosted online that way.

To be perfectly honest, it is NOT worth the hassle. I used to have my own server running and you always had to have that computer running, plus with most providers your IP address is NOT static meaning it changes all the time. So you would need a program running on your computer that updates you domain name with the information. You can get free domain names that belong to the service you are using to point to your computer, like www.dyndns.org . If you go there they can explain the part about redirecting to your computer.

As for the server part, you will need an OS that has the capabilities of being a server. WIN98 can do that but can only support 3 connections at a time( approx) and WIN xp can also do this.

The other thing to remember is that usually you only get so much bandwidth per month that you are allowed to upload and download, most companies do this to prevent people from running websites on a home connection. Also they sometimes block the ports that allow you to run a website.

If you go here you can get hosting for pretty cheap a year www.totalchoicehosting.com You can even buy your own domain name with them it you want.

Hope that helps.

make sure you won't get in trouble for hosting a site off your local internet connection

The link I gave you to totalchoice has a few different plans. the base one is 4$ a month or 44$ per year and that one gives you 450mb disk space and 10 gig transfer for bandwidth. The next one up is 5$ per month or 55$ per year and it has 850mb disk space and 20 gig transfer.

But with 850 meg space that is more than enough to do what you want to do, but 20 gig a month of bandwidth is great.

I guess those options sound like a better plan than running my own web-server. I have unlimited bandwidth through my ISP, I do have a download throughput though which is 170 megs. (if I download more than 170 megs of data in 4 hours my bandwidth is cut down by 80%)
