home wiring question
 

i remember someone here saying their whole house used Cat5? this would be great and not that hard to do, BUT how do you hook up RJ-11 connectors to Cat5? such as for a phone, modem, etc(duh)...is their some sort of adapter? or do you only use 4 of the wires? thanks, i like knowing this kinda stuff :)

im not the one who said it... but my house is wired like that too...
i put boxes in the walls so i just hooked the rj-45 cable to the back of the box in the wall. ill get some pics of it later today

You just used 2 of the wires for voice connections on a CAT5. Split the pairs.

So, in a sense, you can run 4 phone lines from one CAT5 wire.

rj-45 and rj-11 are 2 complety different plug sockets one is used for phones and one is used for puters
you cant use one wire for both. one or the other

and you only need 2 wires for phone line just hook up the middle 2 the outside 2 wires are used for dsl

do you just use any pair of wires to connect to the phone jacks? or are there certain pairs it needs to use? and which wire of which pari goes where on the jack?...i hope that made sense to someone...also did you notice any difference before/after with the CAT5? was the clarity better? higher modem speeds perhaps?

another somewhat related question...my phone clarity isnt the greatest...my dial up speeds are 40k at most with a 56k modem...i blame the phone lines...would it do any good to run high quality lines in the house? because im sure the connections from our box outside to the area connection thingy(like my terms) arent all that great...im sure theyre old and busted as well...would it do any noticeable good to upgrade the wiring in the house if the wiring after it leaves the house sucks as well.

any pair is fine. just remember the color of the pair for the line.
using data grade cable increases the capablity of the cable, but the data rate is restricted by the standard, so any increase should be unnoticable.
if u r recieving high packet loss look for sources of interferance along ur cable although 40k sounds fine for 56k.

You can use CAT5, but since it is more expensive, then if it were me, I would just use it to ethernet ports throughout the house.

actually when u buy a spool of cat5 cable uve got some left over after wiring ur house... so i just used it for phone too.
and yea i got a huge network... i got a dlink 4 port switch, and 2 linksys 8 port routers
