pardon my ignorance but what does weather radar have to do with the forecast and flight planning? by then its too late right?

If the forcast wx for the intended route of flight indicates no known sigmets, then there is no problem but weather conditions can change in a heartbeat. Its always nice to have a 2nd pair of eyes (radar) as a tool to help flying around areas of thunderstorm activity or do the standard technique of the 180 degree turn.
