Default Hey Wren...HP question

So, my sister in law had to return her new lappy to Best Buy because one of her
keys had fallen off after only having it for for about a month, and she barely used it during that time.
Well, BB told her they were sending it to HP to do the repairs. They said it would be about 2 weeks.
Well, after 3 weeks she got it back and...
.
.

all of the "extra" programs that she deleted, like the free trials and what not were n back on there, and all of her music she ripped up to her lappy, about 30 cd'* worth, were gone.

SO, we are guessing they gave her a new one.
Or, would they have to or choose to have made those changes before returning it.

Not too big of a deal for her, because it was only music and she still has the cd'*, but what if she didn't. Or, what if she had important work documents?
There was no contact from HP to her, and she had to call BB to make arraignments to get it back.

Not at all saying it was HP'* fault, just trying to get an idea of what may have happened.

Usually it is in the fine print that they might wipe the hard drive. I don't see why this was necessary for just replacing the keyboard. With my gateway, when i had to send it back i was asked a head of time if it was OK to wipe the drive if necessary, and was given the choice to not have it done if needed.

I would look into anything she signed and see if it said something on it. I do know it is pretty customary for them to either wipe it clean, or send you a new one. Fairly certain that this is where all the re-furbished ones come from.

Sounds like an issue with BB to me.

Had she dealt with hp directly, I doubt the 'wipe' would have happened. The laptop is probably a new replacement unit. BB takes the easy way out.

Always run a backup before sending in your pc or laptop.

Backups are a good idea for anyone with data they do not want to loose. Your harddrive will fail sooner or later and often without warning.

We figure they probably just gave her a new one.

iI figured it was probably BB thing too.
Figure they'll do what Don said, or if it did go to HP they'd sell it as refurbished.
She was gonna call BB and see what they say, I'll let you know what we find out.
