Okay guys so as you all know im am not a computer guy
Well im trying to hook up my laptop with my desktop using a hub(old tech i know) but anyways i left my dsl cable }(green) that comes out of the wall in my modem them plugged my yellow(ethernet)cable into my #1 spot on my hub then a short ethernet cable inbetween my ethernet port on my modem then into the uplink slot on my hub..then a cable from # 2 to my laptop...Got no internet connection on either comp what am i doing wrong oh and my laptop says it cant renew its ip adress??if that means anything but if i plug my ethernet cable straight into the laptop boom i got internet so i mustve hooked sumthin up wrong..yes the hub works it was hooked up at my step dads house...Please help me lol

Wall > Modem > Hub (uplink port). Have your laptop off and hub off.

Reset your modem and let it settle in for a two or three minutes to renew it'* IP from your provider. Connect your hub/router to the modem via the uplink port on the hub/router. Then power up the hub/router. Then connect the Ethernet cable to your hub/router and laptop. Then power up your lap top.

resetting wont mess up the desktops connection even if it doesnt work for my laptop right...im not heariong it from my old man if this comps internet wont fire up

Any pc'* hooked up the router/hub when you reset will have to be re-booted. When you reset or shut-down the modem, you are renewing the IP address.

Okay well i did everything you said in the steps it said...ans im back to square one its saying ther is a ip adresss conflict with the laptop....do i hit repair(that makes my laptop renew its ip adress) before touching anything else but after hooking things up how you said to do...got like 40 mins to get this done before igotta go bowling..wanting it done by the time the wife gets home but if i cant get it i cant get it id like to and id also like to thank you ahead of time for your help kev

okay so am now on the internet with the laptop but have no internet on the desktop........says there is an ip adress conflict of the desktop now

Disable your LAN and turn laptop off. Do in the steps Kevin provided. The turn laptop on, after it finishes booting, enable LAN.

turn my Lan off on the laptop or from the desktop???

If your desktop has the conflict, reboot the desktop.

okay so turn LAN off on the desktop then shut it down and restart it then turn LAN on and i SHOULD be good to go ???correct sorry guys i gotta take some computer classes or ssumthn
