All this talk about HDTV and I was wondering? Will this make my VCRs obsolete? That sucks cause I still like to use it as a backup even in this age of DVR and DVD recordable.

Well...VHS by definition IS analog. So not unusable, but definitely wont be the same quality you'd find from a digital recording FROM a digital recording.

unless you try to use your VCR to play HD DVDs / Blu-ray, youre fine.

you can still use it to record HD TV. just it wont record in HD quality, youre still limited by the quality of VHS.

and you can still use it to play VCRs on your HDTV, of course. its just a tv with the ability interpret HD signals.

A HD tv has a HD decoder to decode the signal but VCRs dont have a HD decoder so I assume it wont record HDTV?

yeah a VCR is too old for you to use but old computers Etc.* from 20 years ago you buy and use left and right? Weren't you begging for win 3.1 and dos disks a few weeks ago?

only if you have a cable box. Cable box to VCR via RCA or SVIDEO. That would work.

With PVR'* available, you really don't need HDTV - thats the top of the line option. Digital cable is good enough for PVR'*. My PVR records 80hrs of programming, far more then any VHS tape.

I've not used or had a VCR since 2004 when I moved into my condo.

Yeah I have not used mine for many years but its still hooked up just in case.

You can hook it up, and record NTSC cable still.

It'll look like utter **** though.

DVD Recorders are very cheap, but the #1 choice is a DVR by far these days. It means I can watch all my shows, and not schedule my life around my plasma (not that that would necessarily be bad..)
