my dad needs a new tv. he is willing to spend no more than $1000. whats best , lcd or plasma ? whats the best tv to get for under that price in about the 37" range ? they have so many different brands out now but i would like to at least get him a brand i have heard of before ! what do you guys recomend ?

I got a brand new HP 47" 1080P LCD locally on ebay for just over $800. It has backlight uniformity issues but that is the problem with all TVs using that type of LCD panel.


High quality LCDs = Samsung, Sony, Toshiba.

Cheap = Vizio, Philips, no name brands.

If going cheap expect lack of options, backlight bleed, poor contrast, and backlight uniformity issues.



If you dont mind plasma it is easy to get a 50" plasma under $1000, 42" under $700 if you shop around. No one seems to want plasmas anymore.

Buy.com has a 42" sony plasma for $799.99. Not sure of the specs but I know its HD

I've got a HP 37" LCD. The picture is pretty good, but doesn't have much for extra features, like station label or PIP.

And if you play your cards just right... you get a two for one deal plus a $400 massaging chair.

That'* why it'* Best Buy'* best selling brand... word got out about my experience.

costco has this 37" toshiba lcd for $850 . might go get it.

What is the use of this TV? Causal TV watching, movies, video games, PC stuff?

Generally here'* the pro'* of each type of panel.
Plasma Pros
Higher contrast/Better Blacks
No Lag picture
Better Viewing angles
Longer usable life (manufacturers list 60k Hrs to half brightness, vs 60k hours to "unusable" for LCD)

LCD Pros
Can go brighter (99% of TV'* are too bright from the factory settings however)
Matte Screens diffuse reflections great, and in bright rooms they're MUCH more visible
Lower power consumption
Lighter weight (My parent'* 46" Sony XBR4 LCD weighs less than my 42" Sammy Plasma)

I got this plasma in November because the picture blew away anything else near it'* price. I don't see HP'* on any best selling list in the market, or sorting by BBuy'* "best sellers" online.

Another thing to consider on your budget is DLP. Some DLP sets are VERY competitively priced, and give you over 50" of screen space. In the long run you have to buy lamps however, so a service plan is a good idea with them... They're not super huge, but they're not a flat panel.

its just for casual tv. my dads 73 years old , i dont think he will be gaming much !

A grand is where I'm shooting for. Right now you can get the latest Panasonic 42" plasma (720P) for like $1,050 at a few places. That'* what I'd go with if you are buying right now. We're really waiting until we move to a new house hopefully in the near future. I'm hoping to get a good deal on a 50" near a grand.
