What we do is have overdraft protection, but we never get that low in checking anyway.
You might want to make a checking deposit of maybe $200.00 and not record it. That way you will have a secret $200.00 cusion.

My bro-in-law always rounds up to eh whole dollar in his registry, but not the actual check, so he has a nice cushion. He'* just not sure exactly how much, he thinks around $50 or so.
