Wrong. These are the 2.4: Twin Cam. Nothing like the old Quad4'*. They have balance shafts, better heads, and are fairly reliable.

Can you say "blows head gaskets"? I wouldn't want any part of that engine, but that'* me.

The engine itself... for something else or in a 99 grand am ?

Personally the grand am isn't such a good thing.

I had a 97 with the same engine and I dumped it at 75k

I had alot of problems with the cars engine/suspension/heater core/ water pump/ fuel pump/electrical/ etc etc. The warranty was good to 75k and I got rid of the dang car. I bought the car used at a year old. Rode nice.. when it wasn't in the shop, handled well enough.

After owning the grand am I swore off Pontiac for awhile and then realized it was the engine and the car more than pontiac.

97 and 99 were different body styles. While the motor is the same, some of the other issues would not relate (suspension, fuel system, etc)

However, 99 was the first year for this body style, which might make it prone to more issues than other years (historically shown) These cars though are decent cars though.

A friend had one. He put 130,000 miles on it, I believe. He finally sold it when the tranny died... He didn't have too many issues with it. He was pleased enough with Pontiac to buy a GP after the GA...

The water pumps are some work to replace, especially on the automatics. You have to remove the timing chain and the exhaust manifold, as well as other things. At least a 2-4 hour job WITH a lift.
