I have seen it done with a come-along.
This is the origin of the term "shade tree mechanic."

If you can't afford to buy one right now, I believe Auto Zone or a better auto parts store will rent you one. There is a rental store here that rents them. Their main business is heavy equipment, dozers, scissor lifts, stuff like that. A place like that will probably have better quality cherry pickers to rent than a parts store.

my delco was $160.

what about a chain hoist? those are only $40 or $50.

Actually that was a good idea.
Make up a pulley system and rig it up around one of your garage roof joists.

No that would be too challenging to be able to maneuver.

You could simply drop the subframe down and place the engine on it, then lower the entire car down onto it.
It would take time but is possible to do if you can hoist the car up high enough. That'* how the factory assembled it.
