Anything after say 2000 is generally very safe, especially if it'* a car sold in many other parts of the world.
I'd take my GTI (which is an econobox body) over my '93 in any day of the week safety wise. Will it be more damaged, requiring more to repair? Probably, but the occupants are much safer inside it.

But any small car will be safer than a bike.

I'm looking into the civics because I'm jealous of my friend'* 95 DX. 40 MPG when he first got it, we put on a FWI w/ K&N, now hes making about 43 MPG. It'* ridiculous. He can't come near touching my car getting on the highway or from a stop, but its got some zip to it being a 5 speed.
I can't stand these gas prices anymore
. And... I can't keep my foot off the floorboard ever since I got the exhaust.
Problem is now that everyone is seeing the gas prices, there is no such thing as a $500 civic out here anymore. People are even editing their craigslist to say like *With gas being 3.50/gal, I refuse to accept any less than $$$$* kind of crap. I'd do it too... but still. Trying to decide whether I should sell the bonne, try to pay ins on two cars (inefficient) or park it for a while
Either way, the civic seems like a safe vehicle front and rear, the doors seem VERY thin but that might have to do with just having thin door panels. Great gas mileage, and I can almost personally guarantee it'll run forever.

Sell your lawn care equipment (mower, trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.) and buy a nice reliable horse. I've heard really great things about bicycles too.
Soon those will be the only things any normal people can afford at this rate.
