IIRC the 3.5 is the "budget" engine made in china, what abotu differences in block materials? I've also read that the 3.9 is smoother, etc...

Only the 3.5'* that are slated for SUV duty are Chinese (Saturn VUE, Chevy Equinox, ETC...). All other 3.5'* are home-grown. In the Maxx, I couldn't tell a difference other than power between the 3.5 and the 3.9...both were smooth enough to me. I am, however, looking to to test drive the latest Epsilon body....the Saturn Aura...it has a 3.5 twin-cammer, and makes more hp than the 3.9

actually it'* a 3.6, not a 3.5
