No, you can't have a free car.

I just got a free car. It'* a 94 Chrysler LeBaron convertible with 120K on it. There'* no interior damage, and everything is leather & automatic. The engine is a 3L V6 with 141hp & 171lb-ft of torque, reportedly. It has brand new plugs, plug wires, $200 tires, brake pads, and seemingly turned rotors.

No, it is not stolen.

The transmission was "worked on" at some car place about a year before it went out while the car was going 40-45mph. It shifted into 1st then and is no longer able to move. I was told it could just be some solenoid issue. Regardless of the symptoms and their respective treatments, I'm going to have to take out the transmission.

That 1st gear shift is the "limp-home" mode that early 4-speed transaxles are known for. Keep in mind that it may not be the trans itself...those cars have a seperate computer for the transaxle, along with a few relays that are right by the computer (passenger side under the hood, bolted onto the inner finderwell I think).

I had a 95 with that setup and the only problem it gave me was the timing belt broke while I was on a local cruise. But other than that, they are very good engines and can be modded a little bit (upper intake plenum can be cleaned up considerably). The rear windows often fail, and have an intricate pulley system that you will have to watch out for when/if you replace the motors. And there are ways to adjust the top to make it fit snug. Most people don't like the LeBaron, but I think it'* a great car and really fun to drive.

There are "shrapnel" pieces in the transmission fluid because they're on the dip stick.

that is such a classic example of a chrysler transmission...I have seen many of them go to mush like that to the point where you put it in gear and you go NOWHERE.

But I do remember that on one of em, we changed the trans fluid and it actually did work for a while, so why not try that...it can't hurt.

The car was driving at 40-45mph when it suddenly dropped into first gear. The front end dove down, and the car stopped. There was black smoke shooting out of the trans dip stick shaft. Terrible, isn't it?
