Default Ford Crown Vic help needed

Can the codes be retrieved with a paper clip on this car? My friend owns it and says the check engine light is on....and it stalls right when you start when it'* hot. I have my inital thoughts, but we need to get at the codes.

The only experience I have with the symptoms you explained is a clogged cat. It would drive good until it heated up, then it would choke and end up on the side of the road. It would restart, but chuch and choke and die repeatedly.

Is your friend able to drive it when its cold?

Ya, it drives fine when it'* cold. Drives fine when it'* hot, but the air temps are 40 degrees or less, too.

I really think the SES light will point us in the right direction. Anyone, anyone? Bueller, Bueller?
