Smoke detectors are cheap and once they start acting why would you bother fixing them. I've never had one last more than a few years and wouldn't want one in my house much older than that anyways. These people that spend $40 on one because it has a 10yr lithium battery in it... I just gotta laugh.
Go to the hardware store and pickup the contractor pack, enjoy the spares.
The only one I spend extra dough on is the one in the kithen, its gotta have a 'shut up' button.
