He was prolly thinking about the DOHC 3.4 V6. Good performer, HORRIBLE reliability.

My 3400 SFI is fine, for now (knock on wood) I still wish I would have ponied up for the 3800 tho. Although at the time 'basic' was all I could afford. If mine head gasket blows, I will laugh and say "I should'a got the L36!" I hope at least!

A buddy of mine had a 1990 Pontiac 6000 w/3100. Peppy engine with no repairs from 147K to 181K miles. Then the fuel system failed. He could not afford it, hence junked the car. Didn't leak a drop of oil!

agreed.
exactly what do you guys mean about the 3.4 dohc, all the ones ive seen are good runners with no problems and haul serious ***, except one that blew a valve and the shop in their infinite wisdom decided to replace the engine instead of repair it, and the replacement has yet to start after almost a year now

last i checked the 3100 didnt exist in 1990, youre thinking of the 3.1 MPFI (which still has problems but not as bad as the 3100, the 3.1 mpfi in our old lumina lasted till 321k and was still runnin when we junked it)

The ones everybody else has seen weren't so fortunate. :(

Yes the old 3.1'* wern't too bad either, i mean that'* what the 3.4 DOHC WAS based of (loosely) Really the only big problem with them was the oil pump drive o-ring seal leaking, that one'* no fun. 3.4'* have the same problem. Otherwise you can drive the **** out of them , they'll LONG outlast the transmission (as is the case with many early/mid 90'* GM hydramatics). But as long as you keep regular maintenance they'll serve for years.
