eMail addys sold and or released to the public

Today is a sad day. I have been fielding emails with regards to another site giving out peoples information! YES, un-friggen-real!

Anyhow, the first order of events should be to upgrade your systems with AVG, a free virus scanner tool.

I am doing my best to warn the people as the scam emails have been linked to fake paypal, malicious links and more.

THIS IS NOT A RESULT OF THIS FORUM, BUT ANOTHER BONNEVILLE SITE YOU MAY HAVE REGISTERED ON

We are slowly letting those who have their emails out there know via our mailing system.

This is the content of our email to them.

Dear recipient.

It has come to our attention that a site attempting to replicate Pontiac Bonneville Forum - Official home of the Pontiac Bonneville Club. has released all of your collected email addresses. You may ask "how did you get my email", simple! Through the few complaints we received we were able to gather your email addresses from a nicely maintained publicly available lists!!!!!

In total, there has been over 3500 addresses sold or released that belong to you which has resulted in malicious emails being sent out to your accounts; we know because some of you are members on our sites!
Please protect your systems today! To our understanding the emails being sent are with regards to sending paypal money, installing software or clicking malicious links.

If you are familiar with the site who has done this, please review their TOS and move forward accordingly. In some states the sale or release of such information may be illegal. We are working diligently to help our members to NOT become victims of internet scams.

Pontiac Bonneville Forum - Official home of the Pontiac Bonneville Club. does not sell, release, lend or utilize our clients email addresses under ANY circumstances!

Enclosed are 2 screen captures of what information we could gather. Naturally we have blurred out the address.

If you have any questions or concerns, please check this URL https://www.gmforum.com/t277624/#post1352529
The sys admin of the fake site shall be monitoring it. I suggest you all ask to be removed from their mailing list and database ASAP within that thread to help stop those emails from coming in.

Regards

Richard

I have yet to hear back from the site owner Gord as to why he has publicly listed 3000+ of our emails.

Gord was emailed directly, I suppose he is just avoiding the accountability and chances are, it will Willy who did it anyways.

The good news is, the effort to have it removed from public view has paid off (see attached). Bad news is that our emails have all likely been sold, or at the least leaked to spammers. The email lists are even cached with Google (see attached).

man that stinks

As a member of BC, PBC, and BPro, I honestly would like to see more facts. Can you prove they have been sold? Can you prove they released them with harmful intent in mind? I feel this is kind of like the presidential debate. Everyone has claims, but where is the proof?

What facts would you like to see?

sold or released was the exact subject, either or, that is a serious breach of trust of 3000 people who likely don't want solicitations from fake paypal sites etc.

Regardless of intent, there is still a slice of negligence in there on their part. I believe the burden is on them to prove they werent doing something malicious with peoples emails, not mine.

I'm not a resident of the U.S., I can't relate.

The facts are 3000+ emails were released and ended up in the hands of spammers. What more proof would you like, I believe the owners of the site said 'oops, busted'.

I can't believe people can sink so low...

Personally I feel this subject should be dropped. This site does not need to explain the actions of another, nor does it need to answer questions. It's great that the owners here felt the need to warn members of this and that is where the responsibilty ends. This topic was finally brought up at the other site. Let's keep all further discustions over there.

We will continue to allow the discussion, but I dont want flaming, OR singling out particular members without proof. What concerns me most is that this is a list of 3000+ members.

Why does the administration of that forum have that list that has more email addy's from here then their own 1045 members.

Only one reason comes to mind. To glean members from here. And in the process, their inability to correctly govern and administrate a website shows through again. They "cull/steal" an email list and leave it in plain sight? Maybe they left that detail to the same person who lost 3 days of data :-p

This Forum and Administration is here to discuss and help members with our Bonnevilles. We have no ill feelings towards any Forum, Nor do we see or treat them as a threat. It would be nice to see the same reciprocy from others. We are a forward minded group and are seeing new members in an ever increasing stream without using any tactic other than being and keeping the Forum respectful, friendly, informative. Oh, and well designed and run. ;)

So far, the only facts you have are that:
1. A list of emails was available in a public folder.
2. Some people's email recieved some spam.

IMO, it seems you have nothing more than an opinion on how the emails got released. But, you clearly make it sound as if they were specifically released with harmful intentions. I dont see enough facts to list anybody as "guilty" yet. For the record, the emails should have at least been in a protected folder. GXPV, we all know what happened between all of the clubs. For anyone that didnt see the "event" go down, they wouldnt know about the other sites. Email is a great way to let people know about all their options. I also have an issue with the tag's in this thread. Someone's name is listed at the bottom, but again there is no proof this is because of his actions.
