My Brother had a first-gen Avenger Sport, and it was a great vehicle. Slow off the line, but they corner amazingly....
The 2.7 is a POS motor, avoid it at all cost.
The 2.5 on the other hand is a pretty good motor. It'* a variant of the 6G series that Mitsu used in just about everything, including supplying variants to MOPAR, Hyundai, and several others, and it was also used with a propane carb on forklifts and other Mitsu industrial equipment.
Don't bother with the 4-door Stratus, Sebring, Cirrus, or Breeze, though. They are markedly lower in quality. The 4 doors and convertibles were made by MOPAR and are short-lived, low-quality cars. The coupes were built by Mitsubishi and are actually an entirely unrelated vehicle based on the Eclipse. The coupes are pretty nice cars, and can be kept running well up into the 200,000mile range.
So, first-gen Avenger and Sebring coupes with the 2.5 are good.
Second gen coupes with the 2.7, and all 4-doors and convertibles are on the NO list...

4 Clyinder model.
Yes, Oct 2007.
The car takes a regular beating and still keeps going. 205,000kms on her.
Keep up basic maintenance and you will be fine.
