how do i find out how much max ram my mainboard can handle. im thinking a gig is the max but i just want to make sure.

its a compaq and i found out it hold 2048mg of ram but i only have 2 slots lol ill just put a gig and its be enough

Good Idea. After about 512Meg, it'll probably want Compaq branded RAM, just like my POS Dell want'* it'* own.
